This tutorial will show you how to write to a file on the disk using ASP.NET 2.0 and VB.NET
The .NET Framework offers a number of types that makes accessing resources on filesystems easy to use.
To write a simple file to the disk, we will need to first import the System.IO namespace. The System.IO namespace contains the StreamWriter type that we will use to perform our disk write.

We used over 10 web hosting companies before we found Server Intellect. Their dedicated servers and add-ons were setup swiftly, in less than 24 hours. We were able to confirm our order over the phone. They respond to our inquiries within an hour. Server Intellect's customer support and assistance are the best we've ever experienced.
We'll put our code in the btnSubmit_Click() event.
When the btnSubmit_Click() event fires it executes the File.CreateText method with a parameter specifying the path and name of the file which we would like to write to, it also returns a StreamWriter object instance which we then execute the WriteLine and Close methods on.
| Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click Try End Sub Dim sw As StreamWriter = File.CreateText(MapPath("myFile.txt")) sw.WriteLine(txtFile.Text) sw.Close() Catch ex As IOException lblStatus.Text += ex.Message End Try |
I just signed up at Server Intellect and couldn't be more pleased with my Windows Server! Check it out and see for yourself.
The front end Default.aspx page looks something like this:| <table width="600" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#cccccc"> <tr> </table> <td width="100" align="right" bgcolor="#eeeeee" class="header1"> File Content:</td> </tr><td align="center" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <asp:TextBox ID="txtFile" runat="server" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox><br /> <asp:Button ID="btnSubmit" runat="server" Text="Submit" OnClick="btnSubmit_Click" /><br /> <asp:label ID="lblStatus" runat="server"></asp:label></td> |
We chose Server Intellect for its dedicated servers, for our web hosting. They have managed to handle virtually everything for us, from start to finish. And their customer service is stellar.
The flow for the code behind page as follows.| Imports System.IO Partial Class _Default Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click Try End SubDim sw As StreamWriter = File.CreateText(MapPath("myFile.txt")) sw.WriteLine(txtFile.Text) sw.Close() Catch ex As IOException lblStatus.Text += ex.Message End TryProtected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load End Sub End Class |
